Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Purnendu Gupta of Chicago Spine Center at Weiss Memorial Hospital

Purnendu Gupta, MD, is the director of the Chicago Spine Center at Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago and is a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at University of Illinois at Chicago. He also practices at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Chicago. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Scoliosis Research Society and also serves as an oral examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Gupta is board-certified, and he has a professional interest in cervical and lumbar degenerative spinal disorders such as adult and pediatric scoliosis and kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, tumors, traumatic injuries and complex spinal reconstruction. His research interests include wide-array of topics such as the evaluation and treatment of spondylolysis in athletes, psychosocial and biomechanical risk factors for lumbar disorders in industry and long-term pulmonary function after neuromuscular spinal deformity surgery.

 

Dr. Gupta serves on the editorial board for The Spine Journal, focusing on topics related to spinal deformity, imaging and biomechanics. During his career he has won numerous awards, including the International Society for Study of the Lumbar Spine’s Spine Volvo Award in Biomechanics in 2002 and the AAOS Humanitarian Award in 2003.

 

“There are several exciting opportunities for the spine industry in 2014,” says Dr. Gupta. “With the advancements of spinal fixation, we are able to better apply osteotomy techniques to achieve greater correction for patients with adult scoliosis, kyphosis and other spine deformities. The advancement of biologic fusion technology has enabled spine surgeons to obtain solid fusion in these challenging cases, which has resulted in overall improved outcomes for patients with adult deformities.”

 

Dr. Gupta earned his medical degree Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where he also completed his residency. He has completed a fellowship in spine surgery at the Washington University Medical School in St. Louis under Keith Bridwell, MD.
