Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Peter Gerszten of UPMC

Peter C. Gerszten, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon at UPMC.

Dr. Gerszten is the Peter E. Sheptak Professor of Neurosurgery, vice chair of quality improvement, and director of the percutaneous spine service at UPMC. He specializes in spinal disorders and focuses on spinal neoplasms. Dr. Gerszten received his medical degree from Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and underwent spine surgery fellowship training at UPMC.

Dr. Gerszten is interested in minimally invasive surgical techniques and outcomes research. He is a pioneer in the field of spine radiosurgery and serves on The Radiosurgery Society’s board of directors.

He currently serves on the editorial boards of Neurosurgery, The Spine Journal, The Journal of RadiosurgerySBRT and Neurosurgical Focus. Dr. Gerstzen also holds a master’s of public health degree from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and is a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society, Delta Omega Public Health National Honor Society and North American Spine Society, among other professional organizations.
