Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Michael Hasz of Virginia Spine Institute

Michael W. Hasz, MD, is a spine surgeon at Virginia Spine Institute in Reston. He also serves as a clinical instructor of orthopedic surgery and assistant professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services Health Science University in Bethesda, Md. He previously served as Major in the United States Air Force, during which time he was chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery and director of spinal surgery at the Andrews Air Force Base/Malcolm Grow Medical Center in Maryland.

Dr. Hasz is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and he is a member of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons and Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. He focuses on providing minimally invasive surgical treatments, including robot-guidance, endoscopy and laser techniques. He has a professional interest in new spinal instruments and was one of the first surgeons in the region to use the MetRx MIS system for lumbar and cervical surgery and the DLIF/XLIF approach for spinal fusion and deformity work.

 

Dr. Hasz oversees clinical trials at the institute and currently serves as principal investigator for SI joint fusion clinical trials. He also performs stem cell therapy for disc degeneration. He travels internationally to train fellow spine surgeons on the latest minimally invasive techniques.

 

Dr. Hasz earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota and completed his residency at Grace Hospital in Detroit. He has also completed a spine surgery fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich.
