Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Mark Abel of University of Virginia Health System

Mark F. Abel, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at University of Virginia’s Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic in Charlottesville, Va. He serves as an orthopedic surgery professor and pediatrics professor.

Dr. Abel is the clinical director of the Motion Analysis and Motor Performance Laboratory as well as head of pediatric orthopedics.

 

About half of his practice involves treating adolescent scoliosis and spinal deformities. He has authored more than 70 articles and several book chapters on pediatric orthopedics.

 

He received his medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Abel then completed his pediatric orthopedics fellowship at Children’s Hospital Health Center and University of California, San Diego.
