Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Laurence Mermelstein of Long Island Spine Specialists

Laurence Mermelstein, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon at Long Island Spine Specialists in Commack, N.Y.

Dr. Mermelstein specializes in pediatric and adult spinal deformities, sports-related spinal injuries, and degenerative and traumatic neck and back conditions. He is a leading expert in pediatric scoliosis and is an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society.

Dr. Mermelstein received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia and underwent spine surgery fellowship training at UC Davis. He was the first surgeon on Long Island to perform the posterolateral endoscopic discectomy procedure.

He pioneered new intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring procedures to improve spine surgery safety. He uses laser surgery and minimally invasive techniques and has lectured nationally and internationally on spinal biomechanics and instrumentation.
