Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Kirkham Wood of Massachusetts General Hospital

Kirkham B. Wood, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston as well as program director of the spine surgery fellowship. He is also an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. He served as the chief of the spine service at the hospital from 2004 until 2013. He focuses on adult spinal deformity, scoliosis, degenerative spinal conditions, laminectomy, fusions, flatback, kyphosis, spine trauma and spinal stenosis.

Dr. Wood’s research interests include the effects of instrumentation for spinal deformity, the dynamics of the intervertebral disc and alternative methods and implants for spinal surgery. He has also worked with European scientists to develop restorable implants for use in spinal fixation. His work has been published widely in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Spine, Journal of Biomechanics and Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques.  

 

Dr. Wood earned his medical degree at Albany (N.Y.) Medical College and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has completed a spine surgery fellowship at the Twin Cities Scoliosis Spine Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
