Dr. Fickenberg focuses on advanced spinal reconstructive surgery. His clinical interests also include treating cervical degenerative disc and facet arthritis, coccydynia, disc herniations, lumbar spinal stenosis and scoliosis.
Dr. Fickenberg has been on the editorial staff of The Spine Journal and SpineLine Journal. He is a surgical consultant for a spinal instrumentation company and has helped develop instrumentation systems used in the reconstructive process. He has also served on the faculty of the NASS’ national hands-on spinal surgery course.
Dr. Fickenberg earned his medical degree at the University of California Los Angeles. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif., and has completed a spine fellowship at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore.

John Fickenberg, MD, practices with La Mesa, Calif.-based Alvarado/Helix Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and serves as the acting director of the Spine Center at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center in San Diego. He is the past chief of orthopedic surgery at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center. He is a member of American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, European Spine Society and
American Academy of Neurosurgeons.
