Dr. Benzel’s clinical interests include cervical spondylosis and syringomyelia, complex spine instrumentation, spine tumors, spinal fractures, spinal stenosis, cervical myelopathy and cervical infections. His research encompasses hydrocephalus, neonatal hemorrhage, microelectromechanical systems and spinal disorders. He has authored more than 250 book chapters as well as textbooks, such as “Biomechanics of Spine Stabilization.”
Dr. Benzel has won numerous awards during the course of his career, including the North American Spine Society’s David Selby Award in 2007. In the same year, he was named a finalist for the Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” Award given by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. He holds a number of patents for spinal instrumentation such as the Spinal Column Retaining Apparatus. He also currently serves as the chairman of the review board for the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine.
Dr. Benzel earned his medical from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he also completed his residency in neurosurgery. He has completed a fellowship in spine surgery and spinal cord injury at the New Mexico VA Health Care System in Albuquerque.
