Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Chris Shaffrey of University of Virginia School of Medicine

Chris Shaffrey, MD, serves as the Charlottesville-based University of Virginia School of Medicine’s spine division director as well as a neurological surgery professor.

Dr. Shaffrey’s research focuses on pediatric and adult scoliosis as well as spinal trauma and tumors of the spinal column. He is on the editorial board of Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery and Journal of Spinal Disorders and serves as a reviewer for Spine, The Spine Journal, Surgical Neurology and Journal of Trauma.

 

He serves on the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting’s scientific program committee and is the chair of the Scoliosis Research Society’s morbidity and morality committee.

 

After obtaining his medical degree from University of Virginia, Dr. Shaffrey completed both his neurosurgery residency and orthopedic surgery residency at the same institution. He also completed his neurosurgery fellowship at University of Virginia.
