Dr. Virella specializes in treating spinal disorders and cerebral disorders, with an emphasis on spinal tumors, herniated discs and cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine nerve impingement. He performs cervical, thoracic and lumbar fusions as well as minimally invasive spine surgery.
He serves as a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
After earning his medical degree from New York City-based Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Virella completed his general surgery internship at Philadelphia-based Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He then completed his neurological surgical residency at University of California, Los Angeles, and his complex spine surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He completed a complex and minimally invasive spine surgery fellowship at the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center.
