Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Ann Parr of UMN Medical School

Ann M. Parr, MD, PhD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon and director of spinal neurosurgery at Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota Medical School.

Dr. Parr also serves as an assistant neurosurgery professor at the medical school. She received her medical degree from Queen’s School of Medicine in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and underwent complex spine fellowship training at the University of Miami. 

She is interested in finding new spinal cord injury therapies. Her research involves transplanting neural stem cells grown from a patient’s skin into the injured spinal cord. She has an active translational research laboratory at University of Minnesota’s Stem Cell Institute, where she examines functional recovery mechanisms. 

Dr. Parr’s research has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed scientific journals. She is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and National Neurotrauma Society, among other professional organizations.
