He performs outpatient spine surgery in an ambulatory surgery center, a process which he has had a lot of experience with. “Appropriate patient selection is paramount to good outcomes,” said Dr. Villavicencio said at the 10th annual Orthopedic, Spine & Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference in Chicago. “There should be an absence of significant comorbidities, younger age and the ability to have adequate care after surgery. For these patients, it’s safe and efficacious to perform spine surgery in an outpatient setting and there is a cost savings.”
A few of Dr. Villavicencio’s passions is research and practicing evidence-based medicine. He is founder and chairman of the board for the Justin Parker Neurological Institute, a nonprofit organization that conducts and disseminates clinical research and other information to patients and other stakeholders.
Throughout his career, Dr. Villavicencio has given presentations at hundreds of national and international meetings. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society and Colorado Neurological Society. He has also been a principle investigator for FDA IDE prospective randomized trials.
Dr. Villavicencio earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School in Boston and completed his residency in neurological surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. His additional training includes a fellowship in orthopedic spine surgery at the Institute for Spinal Disorders at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
