Ehud Mendel, MD, is a spine surgeon and clinical director of Columbus-based Ohio State University Spine Research Institute.

He sees patients at the James at Brain and Spine Hospital with specialities including spinal cancer, spine sarcoma and spinal cord tumors, according to OSU's website. He received his medical degree from New Orleans-based Louisiana State University and did a neurological residency at Los Angeles-based University of Southern California Medical Center.

Dr. Mendel leads a team that pioneered a new surgical technique to reconstruct the spine after bone tumor surgery. He's developed multiple spine tumor research protocols and techniques. He was also selected for the International Spine Oncology Study Group to develop and publish research on spine tumors.

Dr. Mendel was featured in a patient story by OSU after operating on a 90-year-old woman who has a spinal tumor. The surgery was risky because of her age, but it was successful.

"Without Dr. Mendel, I probably would have been in a wheelchair, and I think also that it’s possible that I might not have been alive," the patient said in the feature.
