Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Neil Malhotra of Penn Medicine

Neil Malhotra, MD, is a board-certified spine neurosurgeon at Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine.

Dr. Malhotra is the vice chairman for operations and associate program director of the neurosurgery department, the co-director of the Translational Spine Research Lab and the director of the Neurosurgery Quality Improvement Initiative. He is an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is interested in brain and spinal lesions, spinal column reconstruction and cervical and lumbar disc herniation and spondylolisthesis.

Dr. Malhotra received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville. He has published more than 50 scientific articles and book chapters and is the first to have performed endoscopic and exoscopic spinal fusion surgery. As the director and creator of the Neurosurgery Quality Improvement Initiative, Dr. Malhotra developed the EpiLog project, a software system within the EMR designed to enhance disease management and predict therapeutic response. The system has completed beta testing and is now in use.

He developed an outreach program to enhance patient care in 2011 and sees patients in King of Prussia and Chestnut Hill, Pa., to support this program. Dr. Malhotra speaks Spanish.
