Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Aruna Ganju of Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Aruna Ganju, MD, is a board certified neurosurgeon at Northwestern Center for Comprehensive Orthopaedic and Spine Care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Ganju specializes in the treatment of spinal column and cord injuries and tumors. She is interested in traumatic, degenerative and neoplastic processes. Dr. Ganju is an associate professor of neurological and orthopedic surgery at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine.

 

Dr. Ganju received her medical degree from the University of Miami and underwent fellowship training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Her research focuses on the outcomes of treatment for people with post-traumatic syringomyelia and the effect of surgical treatment on basal energy expenditure in people with lumbar spondylolisthesis.

 

She is a member of the Spine Oncology Study Group and mentors women in medicine. Dr. Ganju has worked with female high school students at the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora and previously served as the co-chair of the Women's Faculty Organization at Feinberg School of Medicine and as the board president of Women in Neurosurgery.

 

She also conducts research on undergraduate and graduate medical education and has been published in several scientific journals. Dr. Ganju speaks Hindi and Spanish.
