Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. David Lowry of Brain + Spine Center

David W. Lowry, MD, MBA, is a neurological surgeon at the Brain + Spine Center in Holland, Mich., and is the physician co-founder of TransCorp Spine, a medical device company. He is a member of the North American Spine Society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and The Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Society.

TransCorp Spine is an early stage medical device company developing spinal applications. Dr. Lowry, a co-founder and board member of the company, has an active interest in spinal instrumentation and techniques. He is the inventor of a new surgical technique called TransCorporeal MicroDecompression, which allows the physician to remove either a herniated or ruptured disc fragment, or a bone spur from spinal stenosis patients, without the need for muscle dissection behind the spine.

 

Dr. Lowry has been awarded two patents for his work — one for methods and systems employing intracranial electrodes for neurostimulation and another for implantable bone plate system and related method for spinal repair. He has also served as a consultant for venture capital firms such as the Mayfield Fund and New Enterprise Associates.

 

Dr. Lowry is widely published and his work has been included in prestigious professional journals, such as Neurosurgery, New England Journal of Medicine and Stroke.

 

Dr. Lowry earned his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He completed his neurosurgery residency at University of Pittsburgh in Philadelphia, where he also obtained his master of business administration degree.
