Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Ilya Laufer of Memorial Sloan Kettering

Ilya Laufer, MD, is a neurosurgeon providing care at Memorial Sloan Kettering's Spine Tumor Center in New York. He also serves as an assistant professor in the department of neurosurgery-spine at Memorial Sloan Kettering. He is also affiliated with New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.

Dr. Laufer has a special interest in spinal disorders. He focuses on the surgical treatment of primary and metastatic spinal tumors and degenerative spinal disorders. He is experienced in using image-guidance and minimally invasive surgery and also performs a variety of decompression and spinal stabilization procedures. "My goal is to use modern surgical and radiation techniques in order to effectively prevent or reduce back pain and neurological deficits that the oncologic patient population may experience," notes Dr. Laufer's physician profile page.

 

Dr. Laufer's research interests include the design and oversight of longitudinal studies and prospective clinical trials designed to determine the optimal treatment of patients with spinal tumors. His work has been published in numerous professional journals, including Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The Spine Journal and Cancer Control.

 

Dr. Laufer earned his medical degree at Stony Brook (N.Y.) University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Additionally, he has completed a fellowship in spine oncology and complex reconstruction at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
