Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. James Weinstein of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health System

James Weinstein, DO, is an orthopedic spine surgeon and president and CEO of Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health System, which includes an academic medical center and a network of clinics across Vermont and New Hampshire. Prior to being named CEO, Dr. Weinstein served as president of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic and director of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. He also founded the multidisciplinary spine center at Dartmouth.

Dr. Weinstein has a special interest in spine tumors and developed the first-ever Spine Tumor Classification system. He has won the Wiltse Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and serves as editor-in-chief of Spine. He has authored more than 270 papers and articles, including the Musculoskeletal Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care. As a researcher, he has received more than $50 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health. His work has been published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery: American volume and Health Affairs.

 

Dr. Weinstein established the Center for Shared Decision Making at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, the first of its kind in the United States. He is also a founding member of the national High Value Healthcare Collaborative, a partnership of 19 health systems across the country.

 

Dr. Weinstein earned his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is also a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
