Alexander R. Vaccaro is among the most decorated spine surgeons in the world. He serves as the Richard H. Rothman Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor of Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, as well as President of Rothman Orthopaedic Institute. In 2021, Expertscape ranked Dr. Vaccaro the world’s top spine expert based on publications indexed in the National Library of Medicine’s MEDLINE database from 2011 to 2021. He has authored more than 1,200 peer-reviewed publications, over 380 book chapters, and edited more than 65 textbooks. A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, he completed his medical degree with distinction at Georgetown University School of Medicine, an orthopedic residency at Thomas Jefferson University, a spine fellowship at the University of California San Diego, a PhD in spinal trauma, and an MBA from Temple University’s Fox School of Business. He is a past president of the Cervical Spine Research Society, the American Spinal Injury Association, and the Association for Collaborative Spine Research, and received the North American Spine Society’s Leon Wiltse Award for excellence in leadership and clinical research.
