Smith+Nephew orthopedic sales jump 53% in Q2: 5 notes

Smith+Nephew posted growth in all segments of its orthopedics business in the second quarter.

Five notes:

1. Orthopedic sales in the second quarter were $557 million, a 53 percent increase compared to $364 million in the same time last year.

2. Knee implant sales grew 65.5 percent to$226 million in the second quarter. Hip implants hit $161 million, a 43.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The trauma and extremities segment grew 44.3 percent with $149 million in sales.

3. Other reconstruction, which includes the Cori joint replacement robot, saw $21 million in sales, a 72 percent year-over-year increase. 

4 The company’s sports medicine joint repair business grew 63.6 percent to$211 million in sales. Arthroscopic enabling technologies grew 53 percent, bringing in $147 in revenue. 

5. Smith+Nephew’s total revenue in the second quarter grew 48.2 percent, and the company posted $1.3 billion, compared to $901 million in the same period last year.
