Here are four things to know:

1. Steven Deluca, DO, of Hershey, Pa.-based Orthopedic Institute of Pennsylvania, and Joshua Ammerman, MD, of Washington, D.C.-based Sibley Memorial Hospital, performed the first surgeries with the new pedicle screw fixation system.

2. The ProMIS Fixation System offers choice of screw placement techniques.

3. Surgeons may choose a k-wireless technique, a direct Skin-to-Screw placement, a Tap-Shidi approach or a reusable Jamshidi technique.

4. The system also provides a pedicle screw with a surface treatment that promotes bony ingrowths.

“With interchangeable screw placement techniques, I can switch intraoperatively based on my assessment of the situation,” said Dr. Ammerman.
