NICO, Hitachi Aloka Medical collaborate for improved visualization of brain tumors: 5 points

NICO, an Indianapolis-based neurosurgical device manufacturer, and Hitachi Aloka Medical America, a Wallingford, Conn.-based surgical ultrasound developer, have partnered to create real-time intraoperative imaging for surgeons during brain tumor surgery.

Here are five points:

1. The Hitachi Aloka ultrasound probe allows surgeons to find the location of a brain tumor, proximity of vessels and the extent of resection.

2. During surgery, it can be difficult to view the tumor without a larger access point. The NICO BrainPath in combination with the Hitachi Aloka ultrasound probe seeks to address this issue with superior visualization.

3. The ultrasound imaging allows surgeons to view tumors that are out of eyesight, thus reducing the size of the entry point and cutting down on deficits.

4. More than 300 surgeons are already trained on BrainPath, and it has been used in more than 2,500 procedures.

5. The FDA recently granted the BrainPath clearance for indication for subcortical access to brain tumors, cysts and vascular disease.

“This complementary imaging tool is an important advancement in visualization for subcortical surgery,” said Jim Pearson, president and CEO, NICO. “The neurosurgical field is rapidly adopting new devices to expand treatment capabilities as the population ages and the number of cases increase.”
