Here are five key notes:
1. Including Mount Sinai, there are now 14 clinical sites participating in the study.
2. Arthur Jenkins, MD, associate professor of neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, performs spinal cord injury research at the Icahn School of Medicine and was named local principal investigator of the trial.
3. The Neuro-Spinal Scaffold is designed for patients with acute spinal cord injury. The fifth patient was recently enrolled in the trial. Two of the first three patients are already showing improvement less than a year after surgery.
4. The patients are enrolled through the Emergency Use Expanded Access Mechanism and the safety and outcomes data will be used to gain a Humanitarian Device Exemption application for approval.
5. Dr. Jenkins completed his spine surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and has been involved in treatment for spinal cord injury throughout his career.
