Four things to know:

1. ChristianaCare and Medtronic will share financial accountability in the collaboration, which is intended to improve patient outcomes by applying the most appropriate medical technologies and therapies.

2. One of the first initiatives will seek to address opioid-induced ventilatory impairment by standardizing enhanced respiratory monitoring. Medtronic and ChristianaCare plan to identify high-risk patients receiving opioids for pain management and continuously monitor their breathing for abnormalities.

3. The organizations also plan to launch initiatives addressing heart failure and diabetes. ChristianaCare aims to prevent or slow disease progression, reduce hospitalizations and lower the cost of care for patients with these chronic conditions.

4. Lessons from the collaboration could be applied beyond the Delaware region, the organizations said.

“Together with Medtronic, we are aligning expertise and incentives to exponentially increase our ability to achieve optimal health — not just better care delivery,” said Randall Gaboriault, chief digital and information officer and senior vice president of innovation and strategic development at ChristianaCare. “This collaboration will implement a new value chain, based on vested purpose, co-innovation, digital and data.”
