Medical Device Reprocessing Has $2B National Savings Opportunity

At the 11th Annual Spine, Orthopedic & Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference June 13, Timothy Merchant, vice president of sales for MEDISISS at Medline Industries, explained the savings possible from medical device reprocessing.

“There is probably not a single biggest thing you could do to save money than start a reprocessing program,” Mr. Merchant said. Here are some statistics Mr. Merchant presented about financial and environmental benefits of reprocessing:

•    The annual savings opportunity nationally for reprocessing is $2 billion.
•    Nationally, reprocessing can general $400 million in annual revenue.
•    Reprocessing reduces waste by a total of 10 million pounds nationally.
•    Each operating room in a surgery center and surgical hospital can save up to $20,000 per year by reprocessing medical devices.
