Medacta extending AR glasses to spine, hip surgery

The first augmented-reality-assisted total knee replacement with Medacta’s NextAR system was performed in December, and now the medtech company aims to expand the technology to spine, hip and shoulder surgery.

Currently, NextAR assists surgeons in precisely removing bone and cartilage and in positioning the knee implant.

The surgical system is supported by Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses, which allow surgeons to “see” into the anatomy using augmented reality in real time while looking directly at the patient instead of a screen.

NextAR is designed to improve surgical accuracy and reduce the cost per case by eliminating robotic arms or other OR equipment operators that require a lot of space in the operating room, according to a May 7 news release.

The system also includes artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve preoperative planning.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 18–20 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
