MAKO Surgical Corp. Reports $8.9M Revenue for Q4

MAKO Surgical Corp., a medical device company that markets the RIO robotic arm interactive orthopedic surgical platform and proprietary RESTORIS implants for minimally invasive orthopedic knee procedures known as MAKOplasty, reported $8.9 million in revenue for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2009, up from $1.0 million in 2008, according to a MAKO news release.

Revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009 primarily consisted of approximately $5.8 million in revenue from the sale of seven RIO systems, and approximately $2.7 million in revenue from the sale of implants used in the 561 MAKOplasty procedures performed in the quarter. The number of MAKOplasty procedures performed in the fourth quarter represents a 34 percent increase over the third quarter of 2009 and a 181 percent increase of the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the release.

For the year ended Dec. 31, 2009, revenue was $34.2 million. A total of 1,602 MAKOplasty procedures were performed in 2009, and 2,384 procedures had been performed through Dec. 31, 2009, since the first procedure in June 2006. The average monthly utilization per commercial system increased to 6.0 procedures during the fourth quarter up from 5.4 procedures per system per month in the third quarter of 2009 and 4.0 in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the release.
