Here are five things to know:

1. Called Magec, the magnetic rod is adjustable by a remote outside the body, preventing more surgeries to manually extend the rod.

2. As children grow, physicians can adjust the rods to match their growth spurts.

3. Physicians can expand the rod at three months instead of six months, which aligns with the natural growth of the spine.

4. Children between five and 10 years old with curves greater than 50 degrees are eligible for Magec.

5. The FDA approved Magec in February 2014.
