3 spine surgeons complete 1st cases with TheraCell's novel screw anchor

Alan Condon -

Regenerative medicine company TheraCell has completed the first three spine surgeries with its demineralized bone fiber screw anchor, Fiber Anchor.

Fiber Anchor acts like a drywall anchor to immediately improve screw fixation in primary and revision surgeries, according to a Nov. 3 announcement.

Neel Anand, MD, director of spine trauma at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles; Anis Mekhail, MD, assistant professor of orthopedics at University of Illinois in Chicago; and Frank Phillips, MD, spine surgery director at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, completed the first three procedures with the device.

Clinical trials have demonstrated Fiber Anchor's ability to promote bone growth "in apposition to the screw with interdigitation of remodeled bone into the threads surrounded by native bone," said Curt Cooper, TheraCell's chief business development officer.
