Here are five insights:

1. The new training module for knee arthroscopy will be available for the VirtaMed ArthroS simulator, which will be introduced at the AAOS 2016 conference in Orlando, Fla.

2. The most critical and difficult part of ACL repair surgery happens after the surgeon has removed injured ligament and before he or she drills holes into the femur and tibia bones for the replacement graft: the physician has to identify the optimal location for the tunnels.

3. The simulated patient cases with different anatomies, provided by the VirtaMed module, help a student gain diverse experience in this particular task; the final assessment report will show how well he performed the operation.

4. In addition to simulating the actual procedure, the VirtaMed simulator comes with a special 3-D training module, where trainees can explore the knee from all sides, shift the location of the replacement ACL with a simple click and experiment how these adjustments affect the joint function.

5. VirtaMed, based in Zurich, Switzerland, develops and produces highly realistic simulators for medical training and education.
