Autonomous robotic surgery on the horizon — 5 things to know

Autonomous robotic surgery may be the way of the future, thanks to the newly launched Verb Surgical.

Here are five things to know:

1. Verb Surgical is a partnership between Google’s Verily and Johnson & Johnson’s medical device company, Ethicon.

2. While doctors would still make the decision to operate, the robotic system would be able to react exponentially faster to incidents, such as leaking blood vessels. The increased reaction time would decrease blood loss and surgery times, putting patients in vulnerable positions, such as under anesthesia, for less time.

3. Beyond being more accurate, due to the superior dexterity of robotics, the innovation could significantly speed up surgical procedures. Each hour of surgery increases the risk of a blood clot by 25 percent.

4. Babak Parviz sold the vision of an autonomous surgical robot to Google in 2010. He was initially signed on with the company’s Google X division, and then started working on Google Glass. He has now moved on to Amazon.

5. According to Mr. Parviz, the robotic surgical system could make for a more egalitarian health environment in the future, as surgical robots can be mass produced, while human surgeons require years of specialized training. However, he makes clear that solo-robots in the operating room is still a long way off.
