Here are five key notes:
1. Dr. Summerville performed a revision of a left knee arthroplasy which entailed a polyethylene exchange on March 19, 2013. After the surgery, the plaintiff developed an infection in her left knee.
2. More than a month after the plaintiff developed the infection, Dr. Summerville examined the knee and told woman she did not need an orthopedic follow-up. The plaintiff reported pain in her knee two months later and was examined by a different physician practicing at the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute.
3. On July 3, 2013, Dr. Summerville performed procedures on the plaintiff’s knee including debridement, drainage and a polyethylene exchange at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, Ill. Following surgery, the plaintiff went home on a peripherally inserted central catheter.
4. The plaintiff continued to report pain mid-way into July. On Oct. 18, 2013, the plaintiff underwent an above-the-knee amputation.
5. The suit alleged Dr. Summerville didn’t utilize proper sterile techniques during the initial surgery in March and also failed to order sufficient post-surgical care for the plaintiff after surgery. Additionally, the suit claims Dr. Summerville did not provide a timely diagnose and did not treat the infection or order the necessary post-surgical care for the plaintiff after the July 3 procedure.
