The DePuy ASR Hip Replacement system was recalled last year, due to a high number of complications associated with the metal-on-metal design. Now, patients who have suffered from these complications need additional hip replacement procedures and many have joined lawsuits and complaints against DePuy’s parent company, Johnson & Johnson. Some patients are also bringing lawsuits against their surgeons. Payors are also looking to recoup costs from a percentage of settlements.
In addition to cases related to the ASR implant, DePuy now faces more than 560 lawsuits in connection with its metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip implant, according to the report.
