Engineers Craft Glass Orthopedic Implant That Can Re-Grow Bone

Engineers at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla have designed a bioactive glass implant that can grow new bone, according to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.

The scientists conducted research in rats and found their porous scaffolding design quickly bonded to bone to promote bone growth within six weeks. The structure could prove to be an alternative to porous metal orthopedic implants or cadaver bone transplants.
