1. East Africa’s population is growing, along with the populations’ household disposable income.

 

2. Most orthopedic surgeons performing joint replacement surgeries serve in urban cities, like Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and Addis Ababa.

 

3. Some residents pursue medical tourism, however, as local orthopedic surgeons sometimes lack strong skills and infrastructure is poor.

 

4. Kenya has the Kenyan Orthopaedic Association and Ethiopia has the Ethiopian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology.

 

5. Kenya and Ethiopia both have looser regulations than Tanzania in terms of medical implant licensing.
