Here are six takeaways:

1. The knee system is ideal for patients undergoing surgery for total knee replacement due to osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, rheumatoid arthritis or post-traumatic degenerative problems.

2. Bernard Stulberg, MD, of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland and Geoffrey Westrich, MD, of Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, performed the first two surgeries using the new system.

3. The system was designed from patented designs and net compression molded polyethylene.

4. It is intended for operating room efficiency and reproducible outcomes.

5. In addition to Dr. Stulberg and Dr. Westrich, Daniel C. Allison, MD, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, James Huddleston, MD, Stanford Medicine and Richard Parkinson, MB ChB, Spire Murrayfield Hospital Wirral, also contributed to the design of the system.

6. Exactech is also piloting a revision hip stem and a shoulder humeral reconstruction prosthesis.

“The instruments were intuitive, comfortable to use and allowed for a straightforward and accurate approach to assessing bone loss, and for re-establishing proper implant position, alignment and stability,” said Dr. Stulberg.
