Here are three things to know:
1. Kevin McCarthy, MD, is performing surgery involving three titanium implants. He places the implants across the SI joint via a small incision along the side of the buttocks.
2. The bone grows around the implants, which creates a triangular stabilization for the joint.
3. Dr. McCarthy noted the iFuse surgery is designed for patients with pain in their SI joint, which usually includes 25 percent of lower back pain patients.
