DePuy’s New Ceramic-on-Metal Hip Implant Receives FDA Clearance

DePuy Orthopaedics has received FDA clearance for the first ceramic-on-metal total artificial hip system for patients with osteoarthritis after a study found it comparable to the metal-on-metal hip implant, according to a company news release.

The Pinnacle CoMplete Acetabular Hip System includes a ceramic ball and metal socket for total hip replacements. The approval was based on a two-year, randomized clinical trial which found no clinical difference between 194 patients who received the ceramic-on-metal system and 196 patients who received metal-on-metal hip implants.

DePuy Orthopaedics will conduct a post market study monitoring the patients who receive the Pinnacle CoMplete system for adverse events and metal ion concentration in their blood. Last August, the company recalled its metal-on-metal ASR hip implant due to complications with the design.
