DePuy Synthes to lay off 67 Colorado employees

DePuy Spine, part of Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Synthes, is eliminating positions permanently at its Monument, Colo., facility, according to an Oct. 30 WARN letter.

Between Dec. 29 and Jan. 11, 67 employees will be laid off, the letter said. Affected positions are related to manufacturing, distribution and maintenance.

The positions are non-union, and the layoffs come from a "business decision to permanently discontinue manufacturing, quality, and distribution activities" at the location.

The move comes shortly after reports that said Johnson & Johnson is restructuring its orthopedic business.

"We are continuously looking for opportunities to evolve and improve the way we operate," a spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson MedTech told Becker's in a Nov. 1 statement. "As part of that process, we evaluated our supply chain operations and began to migrate product supply from our Monument, Colo., facility to our Mooresville, Ind., distribution center in 2020. We remain committed to supporting employees and partners during this time of change. This move will increase capacity for our inventory and enhance supply chain operations in support of our customers and their patients."
