Cigna, a payer that provides health benefits for 19 million Americans annually, will now cover Relievant Medsystems' Intracept procedure for the treatment of vertebrogenic low back pain.

Coverage for the procedure went into effect on June 15, and it is now available to Cigna members in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, according to a June 20 press release.

Recently Palmetto GBA, a Medicare contractor covering patients in seven states, also expanded access to basivertebral nerve ablation for more than 5 million patients.

More than 10,000 patients have been treated with Relievant Medsystems' minimally invasive Intracept procedure, the only FDA-cleared treatment for chronic vertebrogenic low back pain.
