7 developments in artificial disc replacement

Spinal Tech

Here are seven updates on total disc replaecment since Feb. 22:

1. Beaufort (S.C.) Memorial Hospital has added same-day cervical disc replacement procedures to its list of offered surgeries.

2. ZimVie is the current leader in the U.S. spine artificial disc replacement market with respect to its overall revenue and units sold, according to a report from consulting and market research firm iData Research.

3. Centinel Spine reached the 500th case with prodisc C Vivo and prodisc C SK.

4. Todd Lanman, MD, a neurosurgeon at ADR Spinal Restoration Center in Beverly Hills, Calif., has performed a breakthrough case in motion restoration for the spine. Dr. Lanman has presented a series of cases in which patients with failed and solid spinal fusions had successful total disc replacements, something previously considered impossible.

5. Centinel Spine's global motion preservation sales reached $13 million in the fourth quarter of 2022.

6. ZimVie, Zimmer Biomet's spine company spinoff, has cleared two international milestones, making its Mobi-C cervical disc replacement device more accessible in France and the United Kingdom. The French Republic has approved the Mobi-C cervical disc for reimbursement in both the public and private sectors, and the United Kingdom has awarded the device the highest quality rating by the Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel.

7. Aetna and plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit on total disc replacement coverage — Brian Hendricks and Andrew Sagalongos — reached an impasse with no settlement, according to a joint status report filed March 17.
