Spinal Tech

The National Science Foundation awarded Osso VR $222,596 to advance the company's surgical assessment platform using automation and artificial intelligence technology.

Four things to know:

1. Osso VR is a virtual reality surgical training platform designed for surgeons, sales team and hospital staff.

2. "We're continuing to refine the assessment capabilities of our training tools, which provide a 'score' after the completion of each module based on a surgeon's mastery of steps, precision and efficiency," said orthopedic surgeon Justin Barad, MD, CEO of Osso VR. "Having a validated, objective and scalable assessment tool is a critical component of surgical safety, as it has been proven that a surgeon's skill is directly correlated with patient outcomes. This grant indicates growing support for solving one of medicine's greatest challenges that will safely provide patients with the highest value procedures and technologies available to them."

3. NSF's funding through its small business innovation research program is designed to help small businesses turn promising technologies into marketable products and services. Startups can receive up to $1.5 million in non-dilutive funds to support research and development.

4. Osso VR's surgical training platform is designed to offer haptic, immersive orthopedic and spine surgery training.
