The University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho has added the Mako robotic system for orthopedic surgeries.

The robot allows orthopedic surgeons to improve precision, accuracy and customization during procedures including knee and hip replacements, according to an Oct. 2 news release from UNM Health Sciences.

John Krumme, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in robotic hip and knee surgery, also joined the medical center. He has performed hundreds of surgeries using the Mako robot.

The operating team, including Dr. Krumme, completed their first successful Mako surgery at SRMC at the end of September, the release said.
