Meagen Fernandez, DO, has completed more than 200 robotic-assisted pediatric spine surgeries at Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute.

Robotic spine surgery primarily focuses on the lumbar spine in adult patients, but covers a larger area with significantly more pedicle screws in pediatric patients, according to a June 1 news release.

Geisinger said the institute is the only children's hospital in Pennsylvania to offer this technology — Medtronic's Renaissance system —  for pediatric spine surgery. The robot is designed to assist surgeons with the implantation of pedicle screws, leading to a more precise and reproducible procedure.

Dr. Fernandez specializes in the treatment of scoliosis as well as pediatric sports injuries, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, fractures and trauma.

She joined Geisinger in 2011 after completing an orthopedic residency at UPMC Pinnacle in Harrisburg, Pa., and a pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta – Scottish Rite Hospital.
