Dr. Kevin Foley to perform spinal fusion with new robot

Neurosurgeon Kevin Foley, MD, performed Memphis' first spinal fusion with a new robotic system March 22, Fox 13 Memphis reports.

Four things to know:

1. Dr. Foley performed the procedure on an Army veteran at Baptist Hospital in Memphis.

2. Dr. Foley is chair of Semmes Murphey Clinic, director of complex spine surgery at Semmes Murphey and director of the spine fellowship program for the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

3. He is also a professor of neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis.

4. Rising in popularity over the past five years, robotic spine surgery has been demonstrated to improve precision, reduce blood loss and decrease surgical times.
