Orthopedic surgeon Mark Gittins, DO, has completed five total knee replacements with Smith+Nephew's Cori Surgical System, a newly approved handheld robotic device.

Three things to know:

1. Dr. Gittins of Columbus-based OrthoNeuro, performed four total knee replacements and a partial knee replacement at New Albany (Ohio) Surgical Center on July 16.

2. The robot is part of Smith+Nephew's Real Intelligence portfolio, which addresses clinical challenges through digital and robotic surgery, preoperative planning and outcomes measurement.

3. The Cori system builds on the functions of the Navio Surgical System. It is designed to improve cutting accuracy and shorten procedure time in knee replacements.
