Illinois health center uses robot for knee, hip replacements — 4 things to know

Robotics

Coles County, Ill-based Sarah Bush Lincoln Health is using the Mako robotic arm for total knee, partial knee and total hip replacements, reports the Journal Gazette/Times Courier.

Four things to know:

1. SBLH bought two Mako systems to support demand in its orthopedic practices.

2. The Mako system creates a CT scan of the diseased hip or knee to develop a 3D anatomic model.

3. Stryker developed the Mako robot, which assists surgeons with proper implant placement and protects soft tissue and ligaments from damage.

4. During the second quarter, Mako total knee procedures increased 80 percent from the previous year to 18,000 surgeries, as reported in Stryker's second quarter conference call.
