Revenues from Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci system could reach $1.5 billion by 2021, according to a Trefis market research report.

What you should know:

1. Intuitive's robust patent portfolio stands largely unchallenged in the robotic devices market.

2. Intuitive could face a challenge by Johnson & Johnson and Medtronic if the recent acquisitions of Auris Health and Mazor Robotics, respectively, are successful.

3. Trefis said the da Vinci system accounted for $1.13 billion in revenue in 2018, but that an expansion of procedures will drive growth.

4. Trefis also estimates that while consistent sales will continue, they will slow and be around $1.2 million, the average price per unit in 2018.

5. Da Vinci systems accounted for 30 percent of Intuitive's total sales in 2018, and Trefis estimates it will remain similar through 2020.
