Connecticut hospital installs knee replacement robot

St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Conn., recently installed the Navio Surgical System for partial and total knee replacements, the Republican American reports.

Three things to know:

1. Designed by Smith+Nephew, Navio aims to improve implant placement and alignment.

2. The hand-held robot enables surgeons to create 3D images of a patient’s knee.

3. The 3D imaging allows surgeons to collect patient-specific information, establish spatial boundaries for instruments and increase accuracy when removing damaged surfaces of the knee.
