Florida hospital installs Smith+Nephew robot for knee replacement

Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, Fla., has implemented the Navio surgical system to assist surgeons performing partial and total knee replacement surgeries using the Journey Uni knee, South Florida Hospital News reports.

Designed by Smith+Nephew, Navio aims to improve implant placement and alignment.

Surgeons can use the robot to create 3D images of a patient's knee, collect patient-specific information, establish spatial boundaries for instruments and increase accuracy when removing damaged surfaces of the knee.

"Navio robotics assists the surgeon in the preparing [of] the bone with the precision of robotics in a freehand sculpting technique," Maggie Gill, the hospital's CEO, said in a Marcy 25 news release. "This technology is going to give patients less pain and swelling postoperatively than traditional total joint replacement methods."
